Customer Review :

Nikon has nailed it : Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-70mm AF-S DX f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED Nikkor Zoom Lens

When the D200 was announced with its highlight set and price, I was shocked at the low price. I was on the wait list at some places, but luckily picked up one at Bhphotovideo. I've had one or two minor glitches such as the mirror/shutter locked up. A quick call to NikonUsa and tech retain told me to reset the menus. I did that and I was back in operation in 10 minutes. The images it produces are incredible. I upgraded from my Nikon D70 which is also an perfect camera, but I wanted some features that the D200 has. My Ai/Ais hand-operated focus Nikkor lenses can be used on the d200 and exposure metering & cleft Priority mode are features I assuredly wanted. This makes macro photography a snap with my Ais lenses. Other added features included Mirror Lock Up, 5fps drive, faster read/write on the Cf cards, vertical grip, improved focus speed and the list of other improvements is long.

Image potential - This is was photography is all about. The colors jump out at you as they are vibrant. The 10mp images allow for cropping when considerable and you can still print large. The b&w mode is great. This camera beats the medium format film cameras and I have a Hasselblad and a Rollieflex as well. So when I want higher potential than my d200, I have to grab my 4x5 camera...

Shooting raw Nef the files are about 16mb. But shoot compressed raw and the files are only 8-10mb and no one has been able to tell the disagreement in quality.

Cons: Still very hard to find as inquire is so high. Need big Cf cards, get 2gb or 4gb Cf cards as you will not want to stop shooting this gem.

Bottom line: The D200 is a pro potential camera body for a consumer price. Wedding photographers have embraced it. There are few photographers who could outgrow it. It's got a ton of features so be sure to read the hand-operated while you're charging up the battery. Unless you shoot high speed operation sports, this should be all you need. If you need a faster motor drive, then get the D2x.

Customer Review :

perhaps a bad sample? : Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

This is the lens to get for any Nikon Slr, from the easy N75 all the way to the Digital D70. It's faster than a zoom and much, much sharper. That's right, no zooming! If you want to make the image bigger, move closer. Want to make a wider view? Step back. This is the lens that all photographers should start with. Most of Henri Cartier Bresson's photos were taken with a 50mm lens. It military you to think about perspective, composition, and arrangement. You can take more pictures without the intrusive light of a flash. It's cheap too. This lens is a classic and will make you a great photographer by enabling you to make creative choices. It works on approximately every Nikon ever made. What more do you need to know? Get one.

Customer Review :

A superb deal for an perfect entry level Dslr camera. : Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens

Nikon has hit a grand slam with this camera. It's as close to perfection as any digital camera has ever come. Sure, there are "better" cameras for more money, but they are all twice the size/weight. I would get this camera even if I had an unlimited whole of money to spend. There is simply nothing like it. Lots of ingenius user interface elements, superb feel/handling, superb flash (both internal and external Sb-400), outstanding image quality, instant response, superb viewfinder, superb Lcd... I could go on. I have nothing bad to say about it, and I'm highly picky. I view I was going to wait for a full-frame sensor body, but when this came along, I could not wait to upgrade.

The lack of a built-in focusing motor is an advantage in my opinion. It's one think the camera is so small and lightweight, and I believe all future Nikon lenses will have internal focusing anyway. So unless you want to use older, heavier, and slower focusing lenses for some strange reason, you'd be paying for and carrying nearby something you won't even use.

In addition to the superb 18-55mm (i.e. 27-82.5mm) kit lens, I bought the 55-200mm Vr Ii and 50mm F/1.8D lenses, the Sb-400 external flash and a remote (3rd party off Ebay). I think many, many habitancy will buy this exact set of equipment, since it's undoubtedly all you'll ever need. No need for an extra battery, unless you ever go many photo-filled days without being able to recharge. Get at least two 1Gb 50x (or faster) Sd cards, so if one stops working (it does happen), you aren't stuck.

The 55-200mm Vr (i.e. 82.5-300mm) is a necessity for shooting any action/wildlife. The optic stabilization is truly awesome, and better than sensor-based stabilization (e.g. Pentax K10D, Sony Alpha) since you can see it working right through the viewfinder, development it easier to frame/focus your shot. Although the lens may seem slow (f4-5.6), don't forget that stabilization gives you an extra 2-3 stops, so it's undoubtedly more like f2-2.8 (without the reduced depth of field, of course). Do Not consider the slightly cheaper non-Vr version, unless the slightly smaller size is an absolute necessity.

The 50mm (i.e. 75mm) is a nice walkaround lens when you want to go as light/small as possible. It's super fast (f1.8!), allowing you to take handheld photos at night with no flash! It's also a nice portrait lens, although the 55-200 is better (75mm is a slight short).

The D40x is a poorer choice for the vast majority of people. The extra resolution means your photos take up more space and are slower to work with. It also has a slower max. Flash sync speed (1/200 vs 1/500). If you don't know what this means, trust me, it's important, and one day you'll be undoubtedly happy you have it. Since the D40's pixels are larger (less pixels in the same size sensor), there is less noise, so having Iso 100 is useless. Do you undoubtedly need 10Mp? Do you print larger than 16x20? Heck, do you print at all? I know I don't. Think it will give you more cropping ability? Think again. Without a super high-priced lens ($1k+), the lack of sharpness and magnified distortion of the cropped image won't be as good as the uncropped 6Mp of the D40. Save the $200 and use it to get the 55-200 lens, or the 50mm lens and the flash.

If you're ready to move to a Dslr, take this camera for a test drive. You will most likely fall in love with it's extraordinary handling, and perfect performance, as so many habitancy have. There will be a new generation of cameras advent out this fall, so you may want to wait, although there's undoubtedly nothing that can be improved upon with this camera.

Great Camera -- A perspective from a D300/700 Owner : Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only)

Just take it for granted that this takes breathtaking pictures under all conditions, along with low light, and that it contains all the hand-operated controls that you'd ever want.

Instead, here's some things that the camera does that you might not have heard about:

* Built-in EyeFi support

If you've used EyeFi Sd cards before, you probably assumed that it would work with the D7000, since the D7000 now uses Sd cards instead of Cf. But not only do you not have to mess colse to with Sd-to-Cf adapters, the camera is de facto EyeFi aware-- you can select to have it upload or not upload on a slot-by-slot basis (so you might have it automatically upload the Raw files you saved to an EyeFi Pro card in slot 1, but not bother to upload the Jpegs you saved to the EyeFi Explorer card in slot 2), and there is also an icon that appears on the Info display to indicate that there are files waiting to upload, that the upload is in expand or disabled, etc.

The Nikon Wifi adapter is going for $400. A 4Gb, class 6 EyeFi card goes for $40. If you de facto want to move Raw files, snag the Pro version for $80. Yes, the Nikon adapter does things that EyeFi can't, but if you just want to get your files onto a Pc without pulling the card, why spend 10X the money?

You're stuck with the usual limitations of the EyeFi card, but I fully expect to use this highlight a Lot with studio portraits-- yeah, it only takes 10 seconds to pull the card and have Windows recognize that you added it, then an additional one 5 seconds to eject the card and stick it back in the camera. But if you just want a quick check that your exposure or focus is where you want it, wouldn't you rather just hit a singular key and see your last shot, then get right back into the flow? You may want to drop your Jpeg file sizes to speed up the transfer.

* In-camera Raw file processing

The camera contains a ton of built-in settings-- in increasing to the basics like Standard, Normal, Landscape, etc, you also get all the varied Scene modes, which are basically variations on those main settings.

Raw processing allows you to see how the shot would have looked had you used one of those other modes. In other words, you shoot in Normal, which basically applies no processing to the image, then settle on the Raw file, and select how you'd like to adjust it. You can change the white balance settings, exposure, basic photo setting (landscape, portrait, etc), noise reduction, color space, and dynamic lighting. With the irregularity of the advanced details on the basic photo settings, you see a preview of how your change will sway the picture.

If you like it, just hit Execute and it writes out a Jpeg to your card. Don't like it, just back out and nothing's saved.

This means that you don't have to worry that shooting in Vivid is going to succeed in an oversaturated image, or you can punch something up even more after the fact. The only real drawback here to me is that it is going to kick out a Jpeg, so if you're planning on doing added editing in Photoshop, this may not be the best route. But if you're just finding to go right from the camera to the web, or want to get an idea of how playing with institution settings will sway your shots, this is a huge shortcut to taking and then deleting a ton of shots. (And keep in mind that Photoshop will allow you to mess with most of these settings when importing Raw files anyway, and the plugin D7000-compatible Raw plugin had a publish candidate posted yesterday, so you can ultimately open your Raw shots.)

And a associated highlight that's in most other Nikons, but that you might not know about-- you can define your own basic photo settings. Want something that's super-saturated and super-contrasty? Just hit a few buttons, select a name, and you're done. On the older Nikons, you had to edit the basic profile itself, now, you can use one as a starting point and adjust from there. Much cleaner.

* User-defined settings on the control knob

Not as secret as the first two, but I can't emphasize how cool this highlight is. Here's the situation I was in last night-- I was shooting a singing contest in a dimly-lit venue. I was allowed to use a flash, but I didn't want to constantly be blasting the singers while they were performing.

I defined one setting as shutter priority, 1/60th, Iso Hi 2, center-weighted metering & focus, no flash. The second setting was automatic, Iso auto, full metering and autofocus, flash enabled. I'd take a consolidate shots in U2 with the flash, close the flash down and switch to U1 and shoot a half a dozen shots, then switch back to U2 and use the flash for a consolidate more shots. There was no fumbling for controls, no worrying that I changed the shutter speed without realizing it when changing between Auto and S-- every time I went from U2 to U1, all my settings were reset to where I put them before the event started.

I don't think I ever felt as determined about my camera settings in a rapidly changing situation as I did last night-- with just a uncomplicated twist of a knob, I was able to change to a wholly separate shooting configuration with absolute trust that it was what I wanted.

To me, the utility of this is almost endless-- I'll probably set up one setting for studio portraits, and the other for landscape stuff. If I was still shooting news, I'd probably be swapping between flash and no-flash configurations. For sports, I'd change between activity modes and post-game portraits.

The only thing that would make this even good would be if I could import and export settings for later use-- even if you use the "Save/Load" settings option to back up your current configuration to a memory card, it doesn't appear that this data is stored. However, it may be a bug in the Load settings feature, as a estimate of my settings were incorrectly reset when I tried to load in settings. Whether way, it would work good if I could treat these like institution basic photo settings, recovery them by name and loading them at will.

* Built-in interval timer shooting

Want to take time-lapse pictures? Just set up your camera on the tripod, specify when you want it to start, how many pictures to take overall, and how many pictures to take each interval and walk away. When it's time to start taking pictures, the camera will automatically focus and shoot, then go back to waiting for the next shot. No messing colse to with tethering, 3rd party software, whatever-- it's all in the camera, and it's all super-easy to set up. You'll find yourself taking pictures of your living room just to see what your cat de facto does all day while you're at work.

* Zoom in live view

This might just be "new to me," but I found it to be very cool for manually adjusting focus when on a tripod-- frame your basic shot, then change to live view. From there, zoom in with the magnifying glass key, and move colse to the image with the navigation pad until you find the point you want to focus on, then manually focus. Since you can zoom into a tiny quantum of the comprehensive image, you can see that you're getting exactly the focus point you want before you take the shot. One gotcha that I always forget, though-- don't forget to pick your cleft Before going into live view, as you can't change it once live view has started.

* Adjustable shooting rate

Again, might be "new to me," but in increasing to blasting away at 6fps, you can manually adjust that from 1 to 5 Fps in order to get a separate effect. You obviously need to be using a fast adequate shutter speed to support your choice-- if you're at 1/2 a second, you're not going to shoot faster than 2Fps.

As I mentioned in one of my other reviews, I used to be a semi-pro photographer-- I was the photo editor for both a weekly and a daily paper, I've shot tons of sports and news photos, and landscape photography is my hobby. I've recently gotten back into portrait photography as well. While I never owned as many cameras as a true pro would have (that semi- means that I never made adequate money at it to be able to de facto spring for equipment), I have shot with a lot of other people's equipment, and I can de facto say that this is the best camera I've ever used.
